We’ve all heard it before, but that doesn’t make it any less true. Eating right is not only important for our health, it is important for our mind. What types of foods can help us get more work done by keeping us focused and concentrated?
Coffee: Believe it or not, coffee really does improve your concentration. Caffeine has been shown to increase alertness as well as concentration and focus. Antioxidants found in coffee may also play a part, so a caffeine pill may not have the same effect. Don’t drink too much of it, however, as more than three cups a day can create a risk to your heart.
Yogurt: This is a good source of protein, which is what our bodies are made of. Most other foods that are rich in protein also contain tryptophan, however, which is an amino acid that causes people to become sleepy. This makes it a good way to start your day.
Oatmeal: Rich in complex carbohydrates, oatmeal provides you with energy that keeps your body and mind alert and focused without crashing the way that simple carbohydrates like sugar are known to do. It also contains iron and vitamin B12, both of which are good for mood and focus. Finally, it keeps your serotonin levels steady, which keeps you from becoming anxious.
Eggs: Eggs contain all nine essential amino acids and are relatively low in saturated fats and calories. They also contain Omega-3 fatty acids which are good for mood and focus, to the point that they are helpful for people with ADHD. High protein foods also stave off hunger longer, giving you more time to concentrate.
Blueberries: The antioxidants in blueberries have been shown to reduce stress on the brain caused by free radicals. They are also high in vitamin C and don’t cause your blood sugar to rise rapidly, keeping you steady.
